Carrageenan: a safe additive.

چکیده
As the general secretary of Marinalg International, an association representing the worldwide producers of carrageenan, I would like to comment on Tobacman’s review article in EHP (1). Authorities worldwide have extensively reviewed carrageenan safety. Contrary to Tobacman’s conclusion (1), all of these authorities agree that carrageenan may be used safely in food. As recently as June 2001, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA; an independent international panel of expert scientists and government authorities) concluded a multiple year review of all of the relevant safety data on carrageenan (2). This included a specific analysis of the potential for promotion of colon cancer by carrageenan. The JECFA affirmed their earlier conclusion on the safety of carrageenan [e.g., (3)]—that it may be used safely in the diet at amounts only limited by the amount necessary to achieve its technical function. Overall, the carrageenan sold as a food, drug, and cosmetic additive has been tested extensively, and regulatory authorities worldwide have uniformly found carrageenan to be essentially nontoxic and agreed that it may be used safely in food.

Carrageenan Safety
There is no confusion regarding the safety of carrageenan. Carrageenan is a safe and natural fiber extracted from seaweed [1]. It is an indigestible polysaccharide that is commonly used in foods as a natural thickening, gelling, and stabilizing agent. It is used as a gelling agent in our vegetarian softgels and On Guard Toothpaste. Carrageenan-containing softgel capsules are the only stable veg...
متن کاملNon-Clinical Safety Evaluation of Intranasal Iota-Carrageenan
Carrageenan has been widely used as food additive for decades and therefore, an extended oral data set is available in the public domain. Less data are available for other routes of administration, especially intranasal administration. The current publication describes the non-clinical safety and toxicity of native (non-degraded) iota-carrageenan when applied intranasally or via inhalation. Int...
متن کاملExposure to Common Food Additive Carrageenan Alone Leads to Fasting Hyperglycemia and in Combination with High Fat Diet Exacerbates Glucose Intolerance and Hyperlipidemia without Effect on Weight
AIMS Major aims were to determine whether exposure to the commonly used food additive carrageenan could induce fasting hyperglycemia and could increase the effects of a high fat diet on glucose intolerance and dyslipidemia. METHODS C57BL/6J mice were exposed to either carrageenan, high fat diet, or the combination of high fat diet and carrageenan, or untreated, for one year. Effects on fastin...

متن کاملCarrageenan as a dry strength additive for papermaking
Carrageenans are commercially important sulfated gums found in various species of red seaweeds (Rhodophyta), wherein they serve a structural function similar to that of pectins in land plants. In this study, carrageenan was used independently or in combination with cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and/or Al2(SO4)3 to explore its application as a dry strength additive in papermaking. Strength inde...
